Choked with Cares, Riches, and Pleasures - Luke 8:14

Choked with Cares, Riches, and Pleasures - Luke 8:14

INTRODUCTION

The word of God works effectually in those that believe (1 Thessalonians 2:13), but the Devil works hard to choke out the fruitfulness of the word. In his efforts, the Devil uses whatever means necessary, but one of his greatest weapons of choice is the pleasure afforded in this life. In order to convince people that they do not need the Lord or His word, the Devil has to convince people that they have everything they could possibly ever want or need. He must convince them that they are happy and satisfied. He must keep them preoccupied so that they do not have time to recognize that they are "wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked" (Revelation 3:17) apart from the Lord.

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS

  • (For smaller children) God warned His people not to forget Him when things were going well (Deuteronomy 8:11-14; Proverbs 30:8b-9a). Because they were happy and satisfied, they were blind to their own disobedience (Hosea 13:6-8; Amos 6:1-7).
  • How has the desire for pleasure personally choked out the fruitfulness of the word in your life? What are you willing to do to insure that this attack on the word ceases?
  • Does pleasure ever keep you from reading, studying, memorizing, or hearing the word of God? How has this harmed you spiritually?

PRAYER NEEDS

  • Ask the Lord to help His word work in your heart.
  • Ask God to show you when pleasure takes precedence.
