Charity Edifieth - 1 Corinthians 8:1

Charity Edifieth - 1 Corinthians 8:1

INTRODUCTION

The knowledge of something wrong helps a spiritual person avoid such activity. On the surface, one might fail to distinguish much of a difference between the fruit of knowledge and charity in today’s passage. Both evidently build up the believer. Yet, a closer look reveals the major difference. The Bible says that knowledge “puffeth up.” The idea is that knowledge makes one feel superior and can offer a false strength. Knowledge seems to do the same work as charity, but knowledge without the charity serves as a façade. Charity, however, offers real growth and stability. Unlike knowledge, charity edifieth. Charity not only builds up the believer but also those who associate with that believer. The only way to be edified and the only way to edify others involves seeking the Lord for pure, unadulterated charity.

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS

  • (For children): Before Paul came to Jesus on the road to Damascus, he knew many things about God. Yet, he never thought he was better than others. He later wrote that to know the love of Christ was better than knowledge (Ephesians 3:19). He shared what he knew with others and wanted them to pass it on (2 Timothy 2:2).
  • (For everyone):  Knowledge often leads to pride and “pride goeth before destruction” (Proverbs 16:18). In what ways is charity better than knowledge? How can knowledge destroy you and others?
  • What are some ways in which the Lord could use charity through your life to edify other believers? When is the last time you used charity to strengthen a brother or sister in Christ?

PRAYER NEEDS

  • Ask the Lord to protect you from being destroyed.
  • Ask God to give you a pure heart of charity.
