A Martyr Without Charity - 1 Corinthians 13:1-3
See All...
INTRODUCTION
It takes a special person with strong conviction to be willing to die for a cause. This is magnified when a man is willing to die for his faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Martyrdom in and of itself is not, however, a complete testimony of the perfect Christian. The apostle Paul indicates that a person can give his life for the faith but lack charity (1 Corinthians 13:3And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.
See All...). He boldly declares that a man can give his "body to be burned," but profit nothing because he lacks charity. Unfortunately, there are many Christians today that seem willing to die for the faith, some even seem to try to provoke the world to put them to death, but they lack charity. According to Paul, those people profit nothing.
DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS
- (For smaller children) The Bible tells us to have charity (1 Peter 4:8And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins.
See All...). It is treating others like family and like you would want to be treated (3 John 1:5-6 [5] Beloved, thou doest faithfully whatsoever thou doest to the brethren, and to strangers; [6] Which have borne witness of thy charity before the church: whom if thou bring forward on their journey after a godly sort, thou shalt do well:

It's the greatest indication that you are a grownup or mature Christian (Colossians 3:12-14 [12] Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; [13] Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. [14] And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.
See All...). - What would you think of someone who was willing to die for his faith? Why is it important to keep things in proper perspective concerning those who are martyred?
- Sometimes Christians make idols out of martyrs. How does 1 Corinthians 13:3And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.
See All... admonish us to keep things in the proper perspective?
